The reserve is also home to 104 other types of Eurasian birdlife and offers spectacular views of the Uvac River which meanders below. We'll hike down the side of the canyon to the riverbank to take the boat ride which will take us to the entrance of Usac Cave. From this vantage point, we will be looking over the impressive Drina Canyon and mountains in neighbouring Bosnia. The Drina River roams through this magical landscape and draws the border between Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The dense dark forests of Tara mountains are home to the brown bear, wolves, foxes, deer, etc.

As they are wild animals, it is necessary to be patient, still, and quiet, to see the bears. From our experience, the chance to see them during the cold days is pretty high as they have regular habits and come to specific places to feed.

Tour Information

    • TARA MOUNTAIN

Stara planina (the Balkan mountains), after which the Balkan Peninsula was named, extends 550 kilometres across its central part and connects Serbia and Bulgaria. Endless stretches of untouched nature, vast mountain pastures and forests rich in forest fruit and herbs, picturesque villages and interesting folklore. That is the true picture of Stara planina, one of the most beautiful and most authentic nature reserves.
It is a wonderful world of peaks, waterfalls, canyons, gorges, caves, connected with numerous hiking trails.

      MEĆAVNIK

Interesting and uncommon, the story of GostuSa spread across the borders of Serbia and attracted the attention of experts worldwide. The reason for this lies in the houses built from stone, mud and other natural materials that the locals found in the surroundings of Stara planina. The houses were built without mortar or any other binding material, but with the technique called “suvozidica” (roughly translated: drywall or dry-build). It means that the base material isn’t tiles but stone plates.
Therefore, all buildings from their base to their roofs are made from stone. A great deal of craftsmanship, experience and hardwork are required to build such a house. This technique has been used in GostuSa for centuries and the results speak for themselves. You can see them in the houses that don’t crumble under the decay of time even though they are old and run-down. And that’s exactly what makes them so unique, rare and a thing you simply have to witness and experience.

      UVAC

      ZLATIBOR MOUNTAIN

Zlatibor Mountain is one of the most beautiful and friendly mountainous regions in Serbia. The specific climate and harmonious relationship among dense evergreen forests and spacious meadows covered with colourful flowers, streams, unpolluted air, clear water, has developed this mountain into a famous summer and winter resort with the longest tourist tradition in Serbia.
The average height of Zlatibor is about 1.000 m above sea level. Zlatibor is rich in excellent drinking waters. The traditional art of buildings in this region is exceptionally characteristic. The Zlatibor log cabin represents the most accomplished form of traditional Serbian housing within the Dinaric Mountain Range. The old buildings that have survived were fashioned with great craftsmanship and illustrate the skill and art achieved by our people in constructing houses to suit their needs and their sense of beauty.

      SIROGOJNO- OLD VILLAGE

The open air "Old Village" ("Staro selo") Museum at SIROGOJNO represents the village dwelling culture on Zlatibor Mountain. To save at least a part of this cultural heritage a number of authentic objects and buildings have been transferred to the present site of the Museum and conserved in order to be used for further research and to be exhibited for the public. The Museum has a particularly elaborate program to revive old local arts and crafts. Copies of objects of fine workmanship are produced in the workshop of the Museum: pottery, hand printed textiles, utensils of wood and iron.

    • The first night we stay in Mokra Gora village in a very special place founded by famous film director Emir Kusturica. The 4-star Hotel complex Mecavnik is much more than a hotel. Mećavnik is a town of dreams, a town that has turned an image of utopia into reality. Its cultural scene is like no other, with one festival after another, just like the seasons. The main inspiration was the ancient town of Ephesus, one of the first to have an urban core, something the towns of today lost sight of long ago as they continue to sprawl unplanned and orderless with no one knowing how or where they will end. And it was for this very reason that Mećavnik was built, a medieval fortress defending itself from all the forms of poison that attack society. Its defences lie in cultural pursuits and the production of organic food! At Mećavnik, there is a juicery, but also a barn with thirty cows, while vegetables come from Barakovac, not far from Mećavnik, from the very gates to the Beli Rzav Canyon.

The second night we stay in the 3-star Hotel Lane in Sjenica. It is a family-run hotel located in the heart of a small town. With tradition in the culinary business, the place initially started as a restaurant and now as a hotel, they still pay a lot of attention to gastronomy.

Another very special place to overnight. In the centre of the open-air museum Old Village in Sirogojno, there are 7 lodging cabins and the inn. The cabins are built in the form of the 19th-century traditional Serbian housing within the Dinaric Mountain Range. Their interiors are adapted to serve the needs of modern living standards and as such are used to accommodate tourists. The inn promotes traditional cuisine.

All places have restaurants with great choices of local specialities. If you have some dietary restrictions we will be happy to adapt our menu to you.

        Weather Information

Weather is difficult to forecast but, normally, Serbia has a continental climate. Autumn is often with extended periods of warm , sunny weather. The coldest month of the year is January with average temperature a little bit over 0˚C. Spring is usually very pleasant with daily temperature between 15˚C and 20˚C and occasional rain and showers. The hottest months are July and August with average temperature about 23˚C and daily temperature above 30˚C. The country as a whole receives an average precipitation of between 600mm and 800 mm annually in the plains- about the same as that of southeast England – and about 800mm and 1200mm in highland regions. In July and August we usually have some days with daily max temperature about 35C.

        Packing suggestions

Casual seasonal clothing is recommended for most occasions. You may wish to bring a sweater and some jacket even in summer, comfortable hiking shoes, rain jacket, plus trainers or sandals for relaxing. You should also bring some water bottles, sun protection cream (high protection factor 30 and above), insect repellent, sunglasses, sun hat, and a lip salve with sun protection. Also bring a swimsuit for swimming opportunities on the trip (the hotel Mećavnik has an indoor swimming pool).

        General Information

        Currency and Exchange

Serbian Dinar is monetary unit and consists of 100 paras. For 1 Euro you can get 117,00 dinars (current exchange rate). ATM machines are available in Mokra Gora and Sjenica and they require a PIN number. For arriving by plane, there is an ATM at the arrivals hall (downstairs) of Belgrade’s Surcin Airport, which will accept VISA, VISA Electron, VISA Plus, MasterCard, Maestro and Cirrus cards. Some of the restaurants and shops accept credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners). The most widely excepted credit cards are VISA, closely followed by MasterCard. Traveller’s cheques are a little harder to change: Branches of Raiffeisen Bank or Komercijalna Banka are probably the best bet but beware of high commission charges. For Eurocheques, branches of ProCredit Bank are probably the best bet. Neither personal nor travellers’ cheques can normally be exchanged for goods in shops, so credit cards make far more sense.

Banks are generally open from 08:00 to 19:00 on weekdays and from 08:00 to 15:00 on Saturdays.

In smaller towns it is useful to have enough cash. Foreign nationals may take a maximum of 120.000 dinars in or out of the country.

Most of the shops are open from 9am to 9 pm and remain open through lunch.

Restaurants: The main meal is taken at lunch from 1pm to 3pm. Restaurants serve dinner in the evening from 8pm till 11pm.
